Who do I need to tell when I’m moving house?
This is often a question we get asked at Bassy’s Removals. Moving house is a big task and it is so hard to keep tabs on everything. Our movers hear this all the time and want to help.
So, we have created a comprehensive change of address checklist for all of you who are moving and don’t quite know who to tell. Let’s dive straight in and find out who needs to know when you’re moving house.
1. Government Organisations
When we say government organisations, we aren’t talking about MI5. No, we mean the folks at the DVLA, HMRC and DWP.
When you move house in the UK, it is vital that you inform these organisations that you’re doing so. This ensures that they have the right information on file for you so that you don’t miss out on important information and reminders such as MOT notices and any tax correspondence.
Not only is it important for this reason, but also can land you in hot water, risking a fine of up to £1,000. So, make sure you’ve let these organisations know that you’re changing your address. This can be done quickly too, by using the relevant online form.
2. Your GP Practice
Now, this one is crucial. Your health is of the utmost importance, so informing your local practice of your new location is essential.
With the wrong address, the NHS could send important letters and prescription information to the wrong address. As well as this, if you’re moving further away from your current area, you will likely need to register with a new doctor, as you will be out of the catchment area for your current one.
All this information can be sorted by simply letting your GP practice know you’re moving. Call them today!
3. Utility Providers
Time and time again, movers see people stuck without WIFI due to not letting their providers know. Of course, your utilities include the following:
- Electricity provider
- Gas supplier
- WIFI/Broadband
- Water supplier
When you move, you are responsible for settling up and paying your final bills from your current address. In order to do so, the utility companies must have at least 48 hours’ notice of your move, and accurate meter reading to ensure correct billing.
If you fail to do so, you can end up in a mess with your energy company and the next tennant to move in. So, save yourself the faff and let them know you’re moving.
4. The Vets
Of course this one depends on having furry friends. However, like you would inform your doctor, you must inform their doctor, to ensure that they can get the care that they need at your new address.
Much like your GP, it may require finding a new veterinary practice.
5. Banking and Insurance Providers
It is important to let your bank and insurance providers know of your change of address. Failure to do so can leave you and your money vulnerable to being used for fraudulent activities. Not to mention, leaving your insurance registered at your old address can actually lead to a hefty fine.
