How to Have a Stress-Free Move
Moving house and all of the jobs that come with it can add up to be a pretty stressful affair. As professional movers, we’ve helped keep thousands of people calm during their moving day, with our removal services.
With all of our experience, we wanted to put together a helpful guide covering how to have a stress-free move and the 5 things to do when dealing with moving house stress.
Why do we get Moving House Stress?
There are a number of factors that can make moving house a very stressful experience. The most common points of stress when moving, that we’ve heard, include:
- Moving with children is difficult
- Moving can cause arguments with your partner
- Moving is costly
- You’re anxious about moving to a (sometimes) new location
- There’s so much to get organised and remember
These and other reasons are the cause of moving house stress. Everyone is different and has their own trigger points for anxiety and stress.
5 Tips for a Stress-Free Move
We’ve seen thousands of people into their new homes and helped them all move their goods safely from A to B.
So you could say we know a thing or two about moving house. Here are Bassy’s Removals team’s best tips for avoiding moving house stress.
1. Do Your Research
Social media and the internet have so much information available for free. So why not thoroughly research to avoid jumping into the unknown?
Bassy’s Removals have published many moving guides including a ‘who do I need to tell when I move’ checklist and guides about moving with pets. Our guides are completely free and have helped many people with the moving-in process.
So do your research, make lists and get organised ahead of time, to minimise the stress of your move. This way you’ll be prepared for anything that comes your way during the moving process.
2. Declutter (Don’t Take Everything With You)
Listen, we all get attached to random mugs and clothes that don’t fit us anymore. But, when moving house, you need to be strict with yourself about what moves with you. You will have less stress if you have less stuff to deal with.
We always recommend decluttering your belongings before moving and a simple way to do this is to ask yourself the following questions about an item:
- Have I used this item in the past year?
- Will I use it in the year ahead?
- If I was shopping right now, would I buy this again?
- If it is broken, is it worth fixing?
Your answers will tell you whether or not you really need to take that old badminton set with you when you move.
3. Take all the Help you can Get
If you are feeling stressed, lean on your family and friends for support. Alongside a professional removal company, accept the help of your family and friends. They can help with the leg work and keep you a little bit saner on a moving day.
As well, this help can come in many forms. Whether you’ve got children or pets, you can enlist a family member or a friend to help out by looking after them on moving days and taking them out of your hair.
4. Remember Your Utilities!
Don’t let yourself move in without having your wifi sorted and all of your bills in line.
Contacting your utility providers and changing things over is a faff, and we’re not denying it. However, if you leave this till after moving day and put it off, it’ll be ten times the faff.
Be sure that you’ve dealt with:
- Electricity and gas providers
- Water
- Wifi
- Landline phone
As well as any other utilities that require your current address.
5. Pack a Moving day Essentials Kit
On a moving day, there’s nothing worse than realising you need your toothbrush, but you’ve packed it at the bottom of a box.
We suggest packing a moving day essentials kit, with everything you need for the first day and night of moving. Include items such as:
- Water bottles
- Toiletries
- Phone chargers
- Changes of clothes
- Snacks
- Medication
Having all of your essentials packed into one moving day kit will make the day a lot less stressful, reducing your moving home anxiety.
